Herzog Contracting Corp. is currently seeking a Lead OCS Engineer in St. Joseph, MO.


The Lead OCS Engineer is a key position that is fundamental to the development and growth of the Herzog Overhead Contact Systems Division.  The long-term vision for this role is to be a centralized position managing and supporting the OCS engineering efforts on multiple projects throughout the US and potentially Canada.  In the interim, the candidate selected for this position will be assigned to a project while assisting in national efforts to grow the Herzog OCS Division. This position reports directly to the OCS Division Manager with responsibilities for managing OCS Design and Construction.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop project and vendor specific Structural Erection Diagram (SED) programs.
  • Create and/or support project development of SED’s.
  • Work with Project Managers in the development of Systems subcontractor scope and contract execution.
  • Work with Estimators on developing OCS bid packages and/or review of subcontractor bids.
  • Recruit, direct and mentor OCS Field Engineers and Superintendents.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for OCS Engineering to be used by peers and subordinates.  SOP’s shall align with Company standards, policies, goals, and mission statements. 
  • Troubleshoot OCS field issues and work with designers in developing solutions
  • Work with internal R&D in the development of OCS Installation Equipment, Tooling and Material
  • Continually monitor the OCS industry for advances in technology, industry best practices and changed standards
  • Develop Test Program Plans and Test Procedures
  • Develop and execute internal and customer required OCS Training Manuals and classes
  • Participate in project proposals/pursuits
  • Work closely with the OCS Division Manager in achieving divisional goals
  • Support Field Installation and Testing
  • Champion Company Safety, Quality and HR policies, expectations, and goals throughout the development and operation of the RTE Division.  
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • 4-year degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • 5-years’ experience within the OCS industry, construction contractor or design engineering preferred
  • Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to convey requirements and concepts to field supervision
  • Possess the ability to contribute to multiple projects/tasks
  • Experience in installation of Overhead Contact Systems, including Single Wire Fixed Tension (SWFT), Single Wire Auto Tension (SWAT), Simple Catenary Auto Tension (SCAT), Simple Catenary Fixed Tension (SCFT) and Overhead Conductor Rail/Bar. 
  • Risk Management. 
  • Contract development, negotiation, and management. 
  • Subcontractor and/or OCS Filed Installation Crew management. 
  • Intimate, hands-on knowledge of OCS installation, material, and equipment. 
  • Material takeoff and buy out.


Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements for this position.

  • Perform light work, occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Occasionally ascend/descend step ladders and/or stairs.
  • Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
  • Regularly kneel, bend, and squat.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
