Herzog Railroad Services, Inc. is currently seeking a Field Mechanic-MPM in St. Joseph, MO.  This position will be based out of our heavy equipment shop in St Joseph, MO but will also be frequently dispatched to field for repairs and service. Field locations that span the entire United States.


Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

  • Supports all labor activity involved in inspecting, rebuilding, and repairing maintenance of way equipment.
  • Day to day task vary, regularly dispatched to field locations.
  • Welding, electrical, and hydraulic work on railroad equipment.
  • Perform railcar inspections and repairs to FRA & AAR guidelines and customer requirements.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repair of equipment as required.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment   required for the job in a safe manner.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Travel Requirements:

Our mechanics go the extra mile to meet our uptime needs.  Extensive travel time is required in this position. Up to 95% of work time may be spent away from home on an annual basis.  While our mechanics are compensated accordingly, this commitment to travel time should be seriously considered prior to applying for this position.



  • Experience with electrical, diesel mechanics, welding, and hydraulics is a must.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record Class B CDL preferred.
  • Must be able to travel to customer location.
  • Relocation not required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Must provide steel toe boots (safety vest, glasses and hardhat provided)
  • Must have basic hand tools. 
  • Must be able to cover travel expenses (if required) until 1st paycheck is processed (approximately 7-10 after start date)
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Physical and Drug Screening.
  • Industry experience is a plus.
  • Provide all hand tools.
  • Background Check.
  • Extensive travel required


Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification. 
  • Subject to motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
    • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle. 
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements for this position.

  • Occasionally lift up to 100 lbs and transfer up to 10 feet.
  • Regularly push and pull with forces up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in extreme all-weather conditions; uneven surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances.
  •  Regularly use hands to perform activities involving grasping, turning, and holding with forces up to 50lbs.
  • Regularly ascend and descend steps with a height of 28 inches while carrying 25 lbs.
  • Regularly ascend and descend a 7-rung ladder while carrying 25 lbs.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
  • Frequently bend, crouch, stand, and sit for an extended time.
