Herzog Contracting Corp. is currently seeking a Corporate Safety Director located in St. Joseph, MO. The Corporate Safety Director (CSD) collaborates with executives on strategic safety initiatives, safety culture progression, and safety compliance. The CSD aids the Risk Management and Training & Compliance teams in managing the company’s Risk Register as well as ensuring industry leading safety training programs. The CSD is the key safety liaison between the Enterprise and federal, state, and local regulators and industry committees. The ideal candidate for this job has excellent leadership and communication skills with an ability to be self-reliant, progressive and forward thinking.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with industry partners and regulators to ensure industry standards and regulatory compliance
  • Attend regular meetings with regulatory agencies (FRA, OSHA, EPA, FTA, FHA)
  • Lead the Corporate Emergency Planning Committee and serve as Emergency Operations Center Coordinator 
  • Work with executives on strategic safety initiatives and Corporate safety culture
  • Create and maintain Safety Leadership Team succession plans
  • Support professional development plans for all safety personnel
  • Work with executives to evolve and nurture and industry leading safety culture
  • Evaluate, and leverage data analytics to maintain healthy risk barriers
  • Work with executives to effectively manage safety related budgets and initiatives
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key federal, state, and local regulators
  • Serve as Member on key industry committees and boards
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.

  • Safety experience and leadership required
  • Railroad experience preferred
  • Construction field experience a plus (OSHA 10 / OSHA 30 trained)
  • Executive or senior leadership experience required
  • Proficient and knowledgeable in OSHA, FRA, EPA regulations required
  • Knowledgeable in railroad operations (transportation, mechanical, engineering, risk management)
  • Knowledgeable in construction (rail, civil)
  • Knowledgeable in crisis management and risk reduction
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and public speaking skills
  • Knowledgeable in safety management systems and performance safety monitoring platforms such as HCSS and Safe Track
  • Ability to function on key committees and boards, including the company boardroom
  • Knowledgeable in safety training programs, effective teaching and program development skills


Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
  • Subject to motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces
  • Occasionally ascend/descend step ladders and/or stairs
  • Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
  • Regularly kneel, bend, and squat
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet.)
