TransitAmerica Services, Inc./Alternate Concepts Inc. a Joint Venture (TASI/ACI) is currently seeking Conductors to crew the CTrail service between New Haven, CT. and Springfield, MA.  All personnel undergo intensive training in operating rules and regulations and, as importantly, customer service. Candidates must demonstrate a good work ethic and the ability to provide safe, reliable service. TASI-ACI also provides ticketing, lost and found, and other customer service functions at this location.
 
 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the operation and administration of the train while insuring that equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with Federal and State regulations, NORAC Operating Rules, Amtrak Air Brake & Train Handling Rules, Timetables and Special Instructions, Safety Rules, TransitAmerica Services, Inc. Special Instructions and CTrail Contractual Instructions.
  • Provide customer service to all passengers as required and upon request or as needed.
  • Accepts responsibility for the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
  • Accepts responsibility for compliance with rules and regulations without direct supervision.
  • Accepts responsibility for employees assigned to a position for the purpose of training or familiarization.
  • Be qualified on the current version of all applicable operating rules.
  • Report to the train yard at the assigned time to:
  • Perform a job briefing.
  • Perform the necessary procedures to qualify the consist prior to departing the initial station.
  • Be required to interface with passengers and respond to passenger questions and concerns.
  • Make public address announcements as necessary.
  • Perform switching assignments as requested in cooperation with other departments.
  • Perform all required inspections, tests, procedures and complete all required paperwork.
  • Work as a crew member along with fare enforcement team members assigned to their equipment.
  • Diagnose minor malfunctions and performs minor maintenance and servicing activities when maintenance personnel are not available.
  • Comply with train orders, train signals, radio communications, and railroad rules and regulations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the train.
  • Identify and document equipment defects on the required forms.
  • Perform onboard fare inspection activities as required. Perform the duties of railroad Incident Commander at any accident or incident scene the train/crew is involved in.
  • The employee can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time and is seldom absent from work.

  • Initiate the performance of a job briefing with all affected persons.
  • Must wear the required uniform in the performance of duties.
  • Interface with all passengers.
  • Interface with CTDOT representatives.
  • Interface with host railroad dispatchers and personnel.
  • Interface with TASI/ACI Managers/Supervisors and employees.
  • Interface with Federal, State and Local regulatory and emergency service personnel.

 
Qualifications:

  • A valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Three years of safe, increasingly responsible railroad experience as a certified locomotive engineer/conductor in commuter rail operations, is preferable.
  • Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge and ability to pass the required initial and annual examinations.
  • Crew members must have sufficient equipment knowledge and aptitude to restore equipment failures with support from maintenance of equipment personnel.
  • Must not have had any railroad operating rule violations or any positive drug and alcohol test results within the past five years.
  • Ability to successfully complete all training and on-going training as required by the job.
  • Must be able to remain calm, rational and professional at all times while on duty.
  • Must be able to react calmly and effectively in emergency and life-threatening situations.
  • Must be able to speak and write clearly in the English language.
  • Must be capable of communicating clearly and effectively with others.
  • Initiates and responds to oral and written communication.
  • Must be able to successfully complete CPR/AED/First Aid certification training successfully and be able to administer in any situation while on duty.
  • Makes every effort to improve knowledge and skills to be the best in the profession.
  • Adheres to the highest levels of professionalism by demonstrating honesty, integrity and maturity.
  • Must be able to effectively change tasks at a moment's notice when the situation requires.

 
Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position
  • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis

 
Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works primarily in the body of the train.
  • May occasionally be required to work or assist with work adjacent to; on, under or between rolling equipment in varying weather conditions and ambient light levels.
  • The employee may intermittently be required to work adjacent to moving railroad equipment at any time, on any track, in either direction.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, high pressure air hoses, high voltage and varying degrees of vibration.
  • Exposed to shop elements such as noise, dust, odors, fumes and oils.
  • The noise level in the work environment may occasionally be elevated above that of a normal conversation.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals
  • May be exposed to potential accidents of an incapacitating and or fatal nature.
  • The execution of this position’s responsibilities normally requires the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, proper footwear and gloves.
