TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently looking for experienced Signalman in San Jose, CA.
 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for installing, inspecting, testing and maintaining train control systems and grade crossing warning device equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Construct forms and foundations for signal equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Install signal/communication structures and components
  • Lubricate moving parts on mechanical equipment such as switch machines
  • Set up barricades to isolate potentially dangerous situations
  • Prepare and paint signal equipment
  • Install, inspect, test, repair and maintain communication/signal, train control and electrical equipment
  • Provide contractor support as directed
  • Load and unload supplies, dig holes and trenches for cable, climb poles and signal masts
  • Handle cable and wire to make electrical connections
  • Use non-power tools (shovels, picks, axes, sledgehammers); high precision measuring tools (micrometers, voltmeters, amp meters, recorders); hand tools (screw drivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measures); power tools (drills, wrenches, power saws)

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow and sleet)
  • Available to work a 40-hour work week subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include week nights, weekends and holidays
  • Available to travel to job sites around the seniority (designated) region and remain on site for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks at a time
  • Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment, as well as climb signal poles to perform installations
  • Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

  • Commercial Driver’s License
  • One year outside work experience (construction labor, farming, landscaping, etc.)
  • One year experience using Volt/OHM meters
  • One year experience interpreting circuit schematics
  • One year training or experience in electronics, electrical, or electromechanical
  • One year experience interpreting schematic and diagrams

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
    • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle. 
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to outside/inside environments, medium lighting and high noise levels.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions including extreme cold, snow and rain.
  • Will be required to bend, stop, stand, and climb in performing daily tasks and activities.
  • Working in an environment with many distractions.
  • Wearing safety apparel and equipment while performing job duties.
  • Visual acuity and hearing capability sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job unless other vision or hearing standards are required by law.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull loads in accordance with all applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals
